In 1948, Codd moved to New York to work for IBM as a mathematical programmer. He initially worked on the company's Selective Sequence Electronic Calculator (SSEC) project and later contributed to the development of the IBM 701 and 702 computers. In 1953, dismayed by Senator Joseph McCarthy's actions, Codd relocated to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, but returned to the US in 1957 to continue working for IBM.
