Born on April 18, 1974, in Poole, Dorset, England, Wright grew up in Wells, Somerset, with his older brother, Oscar, an artist. He attended The Blue School, Wells, from 1985 to 1992, where his school drama teacher, Peter Wild, would later appear in a cameo role in Wright's film Hot Fuzz.
Wright's film career began with independent short films, eventually leading to his feature film debut, A Fistful of Fingers, in 1995.
