Born on June 4, 1961, in Detroit, Michigan, Eldra was the sixth of ten children to Robert Louis DeBarge Sr. and Etterlene DeBarge (née Abney). Growing up in a troubled home, where his father's abuse and jealousy took a toll on the family, Eldra found solace in music. He began singing in his local church choir and playing piano as a child, and later, with his family's move to Grand Rapids, Michigan, he performed at his uncle's Pentecostal church.
El DeBarge's passion for music only intensified with time. By 1975, he began expressing his desire to become a performer, and by 1977, he dropped out of high school to pursue his dream. With the help of music educator Ricky Callier, El DeBarge honed his skills and eventually began performing with his elder brothers in clubs and venues in Michigan.
In 1979, El DeBarge's talents caught the attention of Bernd Lichters, who secured a record deal with Source Records/MCA. This marked the beginning of DeBarge, the family group, which consisted of El, his brothers Mark, Randy, James, and sister Bunny. Their debut album, "The DeBarges", was released in 1981, but it was their 1982 album "In a Special Way" that brought them mainstream success.
