Born on July 5, 1941, Nailatikau hails from a family of powerful chieftains. He received his education at Bau District School, Draiba Fijian School, Levuka Public School, and Queen Victoria School. Following his education, he trained as a soldier in New Zealand.
Nailatikau's military career spanned 20 years, during which he served on secondment in the 1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment and was posted to Sarawak, Malaysia, during Indonesia's Konfrontasi against Malaysia. He rose steadily through the ranks, becoming a Brigadier-General by 1987. His time in the military earned him a reputation as a popular and highly respected officer.
After leaving the military, Nailatikau transitioned to a career in the diplomatic service, serving for 17 years. He held various positions, including Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chairman of the Parliamentary Appropriations Committee, and Chairman of the House Committee. He also served as interim Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, interim Minister for Provincial Development and Multi-Ethnic Affairs, and Indigenous Affairs Minister.
On April 17, 2009, Nailatikau was appointed Vice-President by the military government. Following the retirement of President Josefa Iloilo, he became acting President on July 30, 2009. He was sworn in as President of Fiji on November 5, 2009, a position he held until 2015. In 2019, he was appointed Speaker of the Fijian Parliament.
Nailatikau has received several awards and honors for his service to Fiji, including the Order of Fiji and the National Medal of Honour.
