A Scottish singer-songwriter known for his powerful, poetic lyrics and soaring vocals, blending folk, rock, and new wave styles to create a distinctive sound.
Fish, born Derek William Dick, is a Scottish singer, songwriter, and occasional actor, best known as the lead vocalist and lyricist of the neoprogressive rock band Marillion from 1981 to 1988. During his tenure with the band, he released 11 UK Top 40 singles, including the Top Ten hits "Kayleigh," "Lavender," and "Incommunicado," as well as five Top Ten albums, including the number one album "Misplaced Childhood."
Fish was born on April 25, 1958, in Edinburgh, Scotland, and grew up in Dalkeith. He was educated at Kings Park primary school and then Dalkeith High School. His love for music was sparked by the iconic rock artists of the late 1960s and early 1970s, including Genesis, Pink Floyd, the Moody Blues, the Kinks, T. Rex, David Bowie, Argent, and the Sensational Alex Harvey Band.
Fish's unique vocal style, often described as a conflation of Roger Daltrey and Peter Gabriel, and his poetic prose-like lyrics, catapulted Marillion to fame. His theatrical delivery and ornate lyrical concepts played a significant role in the band's spectacular rise. During his time with Marillion, Fish explored themes of love, relationships, and social commentary, earning the band a dedicated following and critical acclaim.
After leaving Marillion in 1988, Fish embarked on a solo career, exploring contemporary pop and traditional folk. He released five Top 40 singles and a Top 10 album, further cementing his reputation as a talented singer-songwriter. His solo work showcases his versatility and ability to adapt to different genres, while maintaining his signature style.
Fish's contributions to music have been recognized with several accolades. In 2004, he was ranked number 49 on Classic Rock's list of The 100 Greatest Frontmen. In 2009, he was voted number 37 in a poll of the greatest voices in rock music by Planet Rock listeners.
In 2020, Fish released his final studio album, "Weltschmerz," to critical acclaim and commercial success. He toured the album and celebrated the 30th anniversary of "A Vigil In A Wilderness of Mirrors" as part of the Vigils End tour in 2021. Fish plans to retire from music after a farewell tour in 2024, leaving behind a legacy of iconic songs and a devoted fan base.
Fish's lyrics often touch on themes of love, relationships, and social commentary, reflecting his philosophical views on life. He has spoken about the importance of environmental awareness and has been involved in charitable initiatives, using his platform to raise awareness about social and environmental issues.
Fish's impact on rock music is undeniable, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of musicians and fans alike.
