Born into a family with a strong musical heritage, Sheehan began performing at the tender age of five, following in the footsteps of his vaudeville performer father, Skip Sheehan. Sheehan went on to study music at North Shore Community College and the New England Conservatory of Music, before dropping out to pursue a professional musical career.

Joining Boston and Overnight Success

Sheehan's big break came in 1976 when he, along with drummer Sib Hashian and guitarist Barry Goudreau, joined Tom Scholz and Brad Delp to form the original lineup of Boston. With Sheehan's exceptional bass playing, the band achieved overnight success, thanks in part to their debut album's massive hit singles, "More Than a Feeling" and "Long Time."

Turbulent Times and Departure

Despite the band's initial success, tensions arose between Scholz and the other band members, leading to Goudreau and Hashian's departure. Sheehan remained with the band for a few more years, but was eventually fired midway through the recording sessions for Boston's Third Stage album in the early 1980s. Sheehan did, however, receive a songwriting credit for the track "Cool the Engines."

Post-Boston Ventures and Philanthropy

After leaving Boston, Sheehan pursued various musical projects, including forming Fran Sheehan and the AllStar Band, which actively gigged but never released an album. In 1985, he produced a 4-track demo tape for the then-unknown local band Extreme. Sheehan has also made guest appearances over the years, including a performance of "Hallelujah" with Sammy Hagar and The Waboritas.

Personal Struggles and Resilience

In the 1990s, Sheehan suffered a serious biking accident that left him with injuries to his arm and hand, forcing him to put his bass playing on hold for several years. However, he eventually recovered and continued to perform, albeit with some adjustments to his playing style.
