Francis von Hohenstein, also known as Count Francis von Hohenstein and later Duke of Teck, was an Austrian-born nobleman who married into the British royal family, becoming the father of Queen Mary, the consort of King George V. As a member of the Württemberg and British royal families, Francis played a significant role in bridging the gap between Austria and Britain, fostering diplomatic relationships and cultural exchange between the two nations.
Born on August 28, 1837, in Esseg, Slavonia (now Osijek, Croatia), Francis was the son of Duke Alexander of Württemberg and Hungarian Countess Claudine Rhédey von Kis-Rhéde. His father's marriage to his mother was morganatic, meaning Francis had no succession rights to the Kingdom of Württemberg. Despite this, Francis was educated at the Imperial and Royal Technical Military Academy from 1849 to 1853 and went on to join the Imperial Austrian Army as a lieutenant in the 1st Lancers in 1854.
Francis served with distinction during the Austro-Sardinian War, earning the gold medal for distinguished service at the Battle of Solferino and the bronze war medal in 1859. He later transferred to the Guard Squadron and became a Captain Rittmeister in the 7th Hussars.
In 1863, Francis was created Prince of Teck, with the style of Serene Highness, in the Kingdom of Württemberg. This elevation in title paved the way for his marriage to Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge, a first cousin of Queen Victoria, in 1866. The marriage brought Francis into the British royal family and earned him the British style of Highness in 1887.
Francis and Princess Mary Adelaide had four children, including Queen Mary, who went on to marry King George V and become the Queen of the United Kingdom. Through his daughter, Francis became the grandfather of King Edward VIII and King George VI, as well as the great-grandfather of Queen Elizabeth II.
