Franklin Edward Cover was born on November 20, 1928, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Britta Schreck and Franklin Held Cover. He graduated from John Marshall High School in 1947 and went on to attend Denison University, graduating in 1951. Cover furthered his education, earning his MA in Theater in 1954 and MFA in Theater in 1955 from Case Western Reserve University.
Cover's career began on the stage, with performances in Henry IV, Part 1 and Hamlet. He also appeared in Forty Carats alongside Julie Harris. His television debut came on Naked City, followed by appearances on The Jackie Gleason Show.
In 1965, Cover married Mary Bradford Stone, and in 1975, he landed his starring role as Tom Willis in The Jeffersons, which ran for 10 seasons. This iconic show was a cultural phenomenon, tackling issues of race, identity, and relationships. Cover's character, often the foil to Sherman Hemsley's George Jefferson, added depth and nuance to the show.
During this time, Cover also appeared in the 1975 film The Stepford Wives. In the 1980s, he played Hubert Humphrey in the TV movie A Woman Called Golda. Following The Jeffersons, Cover continued to make guest appearances on TV shows, including a supporting role in the 1987 film Wall Street.
Cover's final television appearance was in an episode of Will & Grace in 1999. He passed away on February 5, 2006, at the Lillian Booth Actors Home in Englewood, New Jersey, due to complications from pneumonia.
