A talented actor who brought rugged charm to a wide range of film roles, from drama to action, often playing tough, no-nonsense characters.

Fred Joe Ward was born on December 30, 1942, in San Diego, California, to a Cherokee mother and an alcoholic father. Abandoned by his mother at the age of three, Ward was raised by his grandmother until his mother remarried a carnival worker. Before pursuing an acting career, Ward served in the United States Air Force for three years, worked as a lumberjack in Alaska, a janitor, and a short-order cook.
Ward's interest in acting led him to study at New York's Herbert Berghof Studio and later in Rome, where he dubbed Italian movies into English and appeared in films by neorealist director Roberto Rossellini. He also worked as a mime in Italy and later in experimental theatre in the United States.
Ward's breakthrough role came in 1979 with Clint Eastwood's Escape from Alcatraz, where he played John Anglin, a fellow escapee. This marked the beginning of his rise to fame, with subsequent notable roles in Southern Comfort (1981), Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann (1982), and The Right Stuff (1983).
Fred Ward received a Golden Globe nomination for his role in The Right Stuff and won a Saturn Award for Best Actor for his performance in Tremors.
