Swedish singer-songwriter and guitarist known for his poetic lyrics and soothing indie-folk melodies, often compared to artists like Elliott Smith and Nick Drake.
Fred Kerström, a Swedish folk guitarist and singer, is particularly noted for his interpretations of Carl Michael Bellman's music, and his own work in the traditional Swedish song segment known as visa. These narrative songs, often performed in a theatrical style, cemented Kerström's reputation as a masterful vissngare, or troubadour character.
Born on January 27, 1937, in Stockholm, Sweden, Kerström grew up in a family of modest means, an experience that would later inform the social, economic, and political critiques found in many of his works and public appearances. His early aspiration to become a vissngare was sparked by hearing local singer-songwriter Ruben Nilson.
After performances at the renowned Visprmen Storken, a barge in Stockholm where folksingers performed, Kerström released his first record in 1963, Fred Kerström sjunger Ruben Nilson. This marked the beginning of a prolific career, during which he became a contemporary of Cornelis Vreeswijk, with whom he toured and released a joint record.
Kerström is perhaps best known for his interpretations of Carl Michael Bellman's songs, which he believed had been misinterpreted by an earlier generation of artists. Rather than portraying Bellman as a jolly and romantic person, Kerström saw him as an accurate social reporter of poverty, sickness, death, and suffering. This perspective is reflected in his ten albums dedicated to Bellman's work, including his powerful expression of Fredmans Epistles, particularly "När skruva fiolen" in 1964.
Kerström struggled with alcoholism in later life, a personal battle that would ultimately impact his career. His daughter, CajsaStina Kerström, would follow in his footsteps as a singer.
Fred Kerström's contributions to Swedish folk music and his interpretations of Bellman's work have had a lasting impact on the genre. His performances, often characterized by deep bass notes and a strong stage presence, have inspired generations of musicians. Through his music, Kerström has left an indelible mark on Swedish cultural heritage.
