Follmer's journey began in the 1960s, when he started competing in Gymkhana events in parking lots in Southern California. He soon progressed to the USAC Championship Car series, where he achieved 25 career starts, including the Indianapolis 500 races in 1969 and 1971.
One of his most notable victories was at the Phoenix International Raceway in 1969. He also finished in the top ten 11 times, showcasing his consistency and skill behind the wheel.
In 1973, Follmer made his Formula One debut with the Don Nichols UOP Shadow team, becoming the oldest debutant in F1 history at the age of 39 years and 1 month.
