Gerald Levert was an American singer, songwriter, and producer who left an indelible mark on the R&B music scene. With a career spanning over two decades, Levert performed with his brother Sean Levert and friend Marc Gordon as part of the R&B vocal group LeVert, and was also a member of the supergroup LSG alongside Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill.
Born on July 13, 1966, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Levert was the son of Eddie Levert, the lead singer of the legendary R&B group The O'Jays. Growing up in Shaker Heights, Ohio, Levert was exposed to the music industry from a young age, often accompanying his father on the road for performances. It was during his high school years that Levert's passion for music became apparent, forming the trio LeVert with his younger brother Sean and friend Marc Gordon in 1983.
Levert's solo career took off in 1991 with the release of his debut album Private Line, which topped the R&B charts. The following year, he collaborated with his father on the single "Baby Hold On to Me," which also reached the top of the R&B charts. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Levert released a string of successful albums, including Gerald's World, The G Spot, and Do I Speak for the World, which spawned hit singles such as "Thinkin' About It," "Taking Everything," and "Funny."
In addition to his solo work, Levert was part of the R&B group Black Men United and collaborated with other notable artists. He was credited with discovering R&B groups such as The Rude Boys, Men at Large, and 1 of the Girls. Levert also sang lead vocals on two tracks for the 2002 film documentary Standing in the Shadows of Motown, paying tribute to the legendary Funk Brothers.
