Gerry Boulet was a renowned French Canadian rock singer, best known as the vocalist for the Quebec rock band Offenbach. He was one of the innovators of rock music in French Quebec, leaving an indelible mark on the music industry.
Gerry Boulet was born on March 1, 1946, in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, Canada. He started his music career with the band Les Gants Blancs, which later evolved into Offenbach in 1969.
In 1985, Boulet recorded his first solo album, Presque 40 ans de blues, which catapulted him to fame. The following year, Offenbach performed a farewell concert at the Montreal Forum, marking a significant milestone in their career. In 1987, Boulet was diagnosed with colon cancer, but that didn't stop him from pursuing his passion. He released his second solo album, Rendezvous doux, in 1989, which won him three Flix Awards for Best Rock Album, Best Rock Concert, and Best Television Special.
In 1990, Boulet won two more posthumous Flix Awards, including Song of the Year for Un beau grand bateau and a special tribute award. Rendezvous doux held the title of the bestselling album of all time by a Quebec artist through the early 1990s, until it was surpassed in 1996 by Celine Dion's Deux.
Gerry Boulet's legacy extends far beyond his music. He inspired a generation of Quebec rock musicians and left an indelible mark on the music industry. In 1991, his solo debut was reissued under the new title Gerry, and in 1994, Dan Bigras produced a recording of Boulet's previously unreleased rock opera Jzabel. Offenbach reunited in 1996, with Martin Deschamps on vocals, and in 1998, the live album Gerry Boulet...en rappel was released.
In 2011, a biographical film about Boulet's life, Gerry, was released in theaters. The film was directed by Alain DesRochers and starred Mario Saint-Amand as Boulet. This tribute to his life and career cemented his place in Canadian music history.
