Italian soprano and actress known for her powerful voice and captivating stage presence, starring in numerous opera productions and films during the early 20th century.
Gilda dalla Rizza, an Italian soprano born on October 12, 1892, in Verona, was renowned for her exceptional vocal talents and mesmerizing stage presence. She was particularly acclaimed in the verismo repertory, earning the esteemed title of Giacomo Puccini's favorite soprano.
Dalla Rizza made her operatic debut in 1912 at the Teatro Verdi in Bologna, where she played the role of Charlotte in Werther. Her breakthrough performance came in 1917 when she created the role of Magda in Puccini's La Rondine. The composer was so enchanted by her interpretation that he later declared, "Behold, at last I have seen my Fanciulla," when she performed the role of Minnie in La Fanciulla del West.
Dalla Rizza's association with Puccini continued with the first European performances of Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi in 1919, which took place in Rome in the presence of Victor Emmanuel III, King of Italy. Although Puccini initially intended for her to play the role of Liù in Turandot, her voice proved too heavy for the part by the time of the premiere.
Her extensive repertoire included iconic soprano roles in operas such as La Fanciulla del West, La Forza del Destino, Isabeau, Manon Lescaut, La Bohème, and Tosca, among others. She shared the stage with legendary performers like Enrico Caruso, Feodor Chaliapin, and Beniamino Gigli, and performed at esteemed theaters in Europe and South America.
Dalla Rizza's international reputation extended beyond Italy, with performances in cities such as Rome, Florence, Turin, São Paulo, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Verona, Naples, Monte Carlo, Bologna, Lima, Parma, Santiago, Barcelona, and Amsterdam. Despite her global reach, she never performed in the United States.
Gilda dalla Rizza's remarkable career, spanning over four decades, left an indelible mark on the world of opera. Her unique voice and captivating stage presence continue to inspire generations of sopranos, ensuring her position as one of the most celebrated opera singers of the 20th century.
