Glen Metropolit is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre who defied the odds by playing over 400 games in the National Hockey League (NHL) despite never being drafted by an OHL or NHL team. His remarkable 10-year NHL career is a testament to his determination, hard work, and natural talent.
Born on June 25, 1974, in Toronto, Ontario, Metropolit's hockey career began in the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL), where he mostly played AA hockey. He then played two seasons for the Richmond Hill Riots Jr.B. hockey club in the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) before heading west to play for the Vernon Vipers of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL).
After graduating from Tier II Jr.A. hockey, Metropolit started his professional career with the Nashville Knights in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) in the 1995-1996 season. He also played for the Pensacola Ice Pilots and Grand Rapids Griffins before making his NHL debut in 1999-2000 for the Washington Capitals.
For the next three seasons, Metropolit alternated between the Capitals and the AHL's Portland Pirates, and also played two games for Tampa Bay in 2001-2002. His perseverance paid off, and he eventually became a regular player in the NHL.
In 2003, Metropolit crossed the Atlantic to play in Helsinki with Jokerit in the Finnish Liiga. This move proved to be a turning point in his career, as he scored the most points on the team, 50, with 15 goals and 35 assists, the fifth-highest total during the regular season.
In his second season with Jokerit, Metropolit became one of the team's top scorers, netting 16 goals and 31 assists, totalling 47 points, the eighth-highest total in the league. His impressive performance helped Jokerit win the silver medal, and he became a fan favourite in Helsinki.
Glen Metropolit's remarkable career is an inspiration to many young hockey players. Despite facing significant challenges and setbacks, he persevered and achieved success in the NHL and European leagues. His legacy serves as a reminder that hard work, determination, and a passion for the game can overcome even the most daunting obstacles.
