A Scottish singer-songwriter and guitarist, best known for his harmonious vocals and acoustic guitar work, particularly in the folk-rock duo Peter and Gordon.
Gordon Trueman Riviere Waller, born on June 4, 1945, in Braemar, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, was a Scottish guitarist, singer, and songwriter, best known as one half of the 1960s pop music duo Peter and Gordon. Their biggest hit, "A World Without Love," catapulted them to fame, selling over a million copies worldwide.
Waller's musical journey began during his time at Westminster School, where he met fellow student Peter Asher, with whom he formed Peter and Gordon. The duo's distinctive harmonies and eclectic blend of folk, rock, and pop styles quickly gained popularity. Their first single, "A World Without Love," penned by Paul McCartney, topped the charts in 1964, followed by a string of hits, including "I Go to Pieces" and "Lady Godiva."
Jane Asher was romantically involved with Paul McCartney, provided them with access to unreleased Lennon-McCartney songs. This connection led to Peter and Gordon recording several Lennon-McCartney compositions, further solidifying their status as a prominent British Invasion act.
After the duo disbanded in 1968, Waller attempted a solo career, releasing the album "...and Gordon" in 1969. Although the album did not achieve the same level of success as his work with Peter Asher, it showcased Waller's continued growth as a singer-songwriter.
In the early 1970s, Waller explored theater, starring as Pharaoh in the musical "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" at the Edinburgh Festival and later in London's West End. During this period, he also worked as a photocopier salesman for Rank Xerox in Leicester, England.
In 1995, Waller relocated to Los Angeles, California, where he co-founded Steel Wallet International, Ltd., a publishing company, with his longtime friend and girlfriend, Georgiana Steele.
Gordon Waller's contributions to the 1960s pop scene, coupled with his unique vocal harmonies and songwriting skills, have left an indelible mark on the music world. As one half of Peter and Gordon, he played a significant role in shaping the British Invasion, paving the way for future generations of musicians.
Gordon Waller passed away on July 17, 2009, leaving behind a rich musical legacy and a testament to the enduring power of harmonious music.
