In 1977, Garouste presented his show, Le Classique et l'Indien, at the Palace theater, which he wrote, directed, and decorated. This marked the beginning of his career as a scenographer and painter. His first art show in 1980 at the Durand-Dessert gallery brought him national recognition, followed by international acclaim in 1982 with his show at the Holly Solomon Gallery in New York City.
