Bluford's educational journey began at Overbrook High School in Philadelphia, where he graduated in 1960. He then went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace engineering from Pennsylvania State University in 1964. Not one to rest on his laurels, he furthered his education, acquiring a Master of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) in 1974, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Aerospace Engineering with a minor in Laser Physics from AFIT in 1978. Additionally, he obtained a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Houston-Clear Lake in 1987.
Bluford's military career began with pilot training at Williams Air Force Base, where he received his pilot wings on January 19. He served as a branch chief in the Aeromechanics Division and later became the chief of the Laboratory's Aerodynamics and Airframe Branch. With an impressive 5,200 hours of jet flight time under his belt, including 1,300 hours as a T-38 instructor pilot, he also holds an FAA commercial pilot license.
In January 1978, Bluford was selected as a NASA astronaut, becoming part of a prestigious group of individuals tasked with exploring the cosmos. On August 30, 1983, he embarked on his first space mission, STS-8, aboard the Orbiter Challenger, etching his name in history as the first African American in space. Over the course of his NASA career, he participated in four Space Shuttle flights between 1983 and 1992, logging over 688 hours in space.
For his exemplary service and groundbreaking achievements, Bluford has received numerous awards and honors, including the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal. He has also been inducted into the International Air & Space Hall of Fame and the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame.
