Hanno Aleksanteri Mttl is a Finnish basketball coach and former professional basketball player, renowned for being the first player from Finland to play in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Mttl was born on September 9, 1976, and developed a passion for basketball from a young age. He attended the University of Utah in the United States, where he played college basketball under the guidance of head coach Rick Majerus. During his time at Utah, Mttl was a starter on the Utah Utes team that reached the final of the 1998 NCAA national championship tournament, ultimately losing to Kentucky.
In the 2000 NBA draft, Mttl was selected in the second round, with the 40th overall pick, by the Atlanta Hawks. He played two seasons in the NBA with the Hawks, making history as the first Finnish player to play in the league. During his second season, he played in all 82 games, showcasing his endurance and dedication to the sport.
After his time with the Hawks, Mttl returned to Europe, where he played for several teams, including TAU Cermica in Spain, Skipper Bologna in Italy, and Dynamo Moscow in Russia. He also played in the Lithuanian LKL League with Žalgiris Kaunas and in the Greek Basket League GBL with Aris.
In 2008, Mttl announced his retirement from playing basketball, but just nine months later, he decided to return to the sport. He signed with the Finnish team Torpan Pojat, where he played for four seasons. During this time, the team was the runner-up in the Finnish League championship in 2009-2010.
Today, Mttl is the head coach of the Helsinki Basketball Academy team, HBAMrsky, and an assistant coach of the Finland national team. His wealth of experience and knowledge have made him a respected figure in the world of Finnish basketball.
