Presnell's career took a dramatic turn in 1960 when Meredith Willson cast him in the lead role of The Unsinkable Molly Brown. His portrayal of Leadville Johnny was a resounding success, and he reprised the role in the 1964 film version of the musical, winning a Golden Globe Award for his performance.
After a lull in his film career in the 1970s, Presnell saw a resurgence in his movie career in his early 60s. He went on to play character roles in films like Fargo (1996), The Whole Wide World (1996), Saving Private Ryan (1998), and Flags of Our Fathers (2006).
