Born on February 22, 1947, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Mason grew up surrounded by music. His father, a drummer in the army band, encouraged him to start playing drums at the tender age of four. Mason's early life in Atlantic City instilled in him a deep appreciation for jazz, which would later become the cornerstone of his career.
Mason attended Atlantic City High School and later enrolled in Berklee College of Music, where he spent a year and a half studying music. He then transferred to the New England Conservatory, where he honed his skills under the guidance of Vic Firth, a renowned drumming instructor.
Mason's big break came when he became the original drummer for Herbie Hancock's jazz fusion band, The Headhunters. During his time with the band, Mason played on several critically acclaimed albums, including "Head Hunters" and "Thrust." His work with The Headhunters not only showcased his exceptional drumming skills but also helped shape the sound of jazz fusion in the 1970s.
In the early 1970s, Mason co-founded Fourplay, a jazz quartet that has become one of the most successful and enduring jazz groups of all time. Alongside Bob James, Lee Ritenour, and Nathan East, Mason has released numerous albums with Fourplay, blending jazz, R&B, and pop to create a unique sound that has captivated audiences worldwide.
In addition to his work with Fourplay, Mason has had a thriving career as a sideman, playing with luminaries such as Bill Withers, George Benson, and Lee Ritenour. His versatility and ability to adapt to different styles have made him a sought-after drummer in the music industry.
Mason's contributions to music have been recognized with several awards and honors. In 2015, he received an Honorary Doctorate from Berklee College of Music for his achievements and influence in music.
Mason is known for his impeccable taste in drumming equipment. He endorses Canopus drums, Murat Diril cymbals, Remo drumheads, DW pedals, and Vic Firth drumsticks.
