Schumacher was born on November 15, 1757, in Glückstadt, Holstein (present-day Germany) to Joachim Christian Schumacher, a sergeant in the infantry of the Duchy of Schleswig, and his wife, Caroline Magdalene. Despite his family's limited means, Schumacher received a good upbringing and was sent to grammar school in Rendsburg.
After confirmation, he became the apprentice of the regiment surgeon, Mehl, a learned and skilled man who introduced Schumacher to both medicine and botany, nurturing his natural gift for science. By 1773, at the age of 16, his dedication earned him an appointment as a military surgeon with his father's battalion in the army stationed in Rendsburg, where he worked under Dr. Mehl's command.
In 1777, Schumacher took an eight-month leave from the army to enroll as a student at Theatrum Anatomicochirurgicum in Copenhagen, where he lived on a meager advance of his low wage. Although he returned to Rendsburg in 1778, starved but determined, his brief stint in Copenhagen had made a lasting impression on Professor Christen Friis Rottbøll, who invited Schumacher back to finish his education and assume the position of prosector at the University of Copenhagen.
Schumacher graduated from Theatrum Anatomicochirurgicum no later than 1779 and began studying botany under the guidance of Rottbøll and Martin Vahl, a lecturer at the University of Copenhagen Botanical Garden. Inspired by Vahl's example, Schumacher embarked on a scientific career, eventually becoming a professor of anatomy at the University of Copenhagen.
