In 1971, he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans alongside Gijs van Lennep, setting a distance record that stood for nearly four decades. He also demonstrated his prowess in endurance racing, finishing second at the 1972 Targa Florio with an average speed of 128.253 km/h.
Marko's racing career was abruptly ended during the 1972 French Grand Prix when a stone thrown up by Ronnie Peterson's March pierced his helmet visor, permanently blinding his left eye. This life-altering incident forced Marko to hang up his racing boots and redirect his focus to other areas.
Marko went on to complete a doctorate in law in 1967, a testament to his intellectual prowess. He later ventured into the hospitality industry, owning four hotels in Graz, Austria. It was, however, his foray into team management that would bring him back to the world of racing.
In 1989, Marko founded RSM Marko, a racing team that competed in Formula 3 and Formula 3000. In 1999, the team was rebranded as the Red Bull Junior Team, and Marko's role expanded to oversee the Red Bull driver development program.
