A pioneering female animator, screenwriter, and film director who broke ground in Czechoslovakian animation, creating beloved children's films and TV series. Her whimsical and imaginative storytelling continues to delight audiences.
Hermna Trlov, a renowned Czech animator, screenwriter, and film director, is celebrated for producing over 60 animated children's short films using puppets and stop-motion animation. Dubbed the "Mother of Czech Animation," Trlov's remarkable career spanned multiple decades, leaving an indelible mark on the world of animation.
Born on December 11, 1900, in Bezov Hory, Central Bohemia, Hermna Trlov developed her puppet-making skills under the guidance of her father, a skilled woodworker. As a teenager, she moved to Prague to pursue a career in vaudeville, acting, singing, and dancing. During this time, she also began writing and illustrating children's magazines.
In 1925, Trlov joined Studio AB, where she met her future husband, Karel Dodal. The studio produced animated films for advertising companies, and Trlov co-directed the first commercial Czech puppet animation film, Tajemstv Lucerny (The Lantern's Secret), with Dodal in 1935.
Following the 1939 German occupation of Czechoslovakia, Karel Dodal fled to the United States and later Argentina. Trlov, however, chose to remain in Czechoslovakia. In 1941, she relocated to Zlín in eastern Moravia to work with Ladislav Kolda at Bata Studios, where she spent the rest of her life.
In 1944, Trlov released the short film Ferda Mravenec (Fernando the Ant), which gained worldwide popularity. The original puppet for the main character is on display at the Toy Museum in Figueres, Spain. Her 1947 film, Vzpoura Hracek (Revolt of the Toys), co-directed with Frantisek Sadek, combined stop-motion animation with live-action footage.
Throughout her illustrious career, Hermna Trlov earned numerous international awards for her work, including accolades at Venice, Cannes, Locarno, and Mar del Plata film festivals. Her contributions to Czech animation and children's entertainment remain unparalleled, solidifying her status as a pioneer in the industry.
Hermna Trlov passed away on May 3, 1993, at the age of 92, leaving behind a treasure trove of animated films that continue to delight audiences today.
