Huseyn Khan Nakhchivanski was born on July 28, 1863, in Nakhchivan City, which is now the capital of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic in Azerbaijan. His paternal grandfather, Ehsan Khan Nakhchivanski, was the last ruler of the Nakhchivan Khanate. His parents, Kalbali Khan Nakhchivanski and Khurshid Qajar-Iravani, were of noble descent, with his mother being a member of the Qajar dynasty that ruled the Erivan Khanate.
In 1874, Nakhchivanski was admitted to the Page Corps and graduated with honors in 1883. He received the rank of cornet and was assigned to the elite Leib Guard Horse Regiment, where he served for twenty years, ascending the ranks to Colonel.
During the Russo-Japanese War, Nakhchivanski was seconded to Petrovsk-Port to form the 2nd Dagestani cavalry regiment from volunteers. The regiment distinguished itself, and Khan Nakhchivanski received seven decorations for his bravery.
In 1907, he was appointed the commander of the Leib Guard Horse Regiment, where he started his military career. He received the rank of major-general in the same year.
In 1912, Nakhchivanski was appointed as the General Adjutant of the H. I. M. Retinue, a position he held until his death in January 1919 in St. Petersburg.
