Bostridge's brother, Mark Bostridge, is a writer and critic, and they are the great-grandsons of John "Tiny" Joyce, a goalkeeper for Tottenham Hotspur in the early 20th century. Ian Bostridge was a Queens Scholar at Westminster School and later attended St John's College, Oxford, where he earned a First in modern history. He went on to pursue an M.Phil. degree in the history and philosophy of science at St John's College, Cambridge.

A Brief Foray into Academia

Before devoting himself to music, Bostridge worked in television current affairs and documentaries in London for two years. He then became a British Academy postdoctoral fellow at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, where he taught political theory and 18th-century British history. His doctoral thesis, "Witchcraft and Its Transformations, c. 1650-1750," was published as an Oxford Historical Monograph in 1997. This seminal work has been influential in the study of early modern demonology.

In 1991, Bostridge won the National Federation of Music Societies Award, and from 1992, he received support from the Young Concert Artists Trust. He began singing professionally at the age of 27, making his Wigmore Hall debut in 1993.
