Irwin Hasen is best known as the creator of the beloved comic strip Dondi, which he co-created with Gus Edson, as well as his significant contributions to the world of DC Comics, including his work on the original Green Lantern, Alan Scott, and the creation of Wildcat.
Born on July 8, 1918, in Manhattan, Hasen was raised in Brooklyn to a Jewish family. His family later moved to 110th Street and Amsterdam Avenue in Manhattan, where he attended DeWitt Clinton High School.
Hasen's art training began at the National Academy of Design, where he spent three years honing his skills in charcoal drawing, inspired by the works of Michelangelo and Bernini. During the day, he would sell his drawings of prizefighters to the Madison Square Garden Corporation, which were printed in various newspapers around New York.
Hasen's career in comic books began in 1940, when he joined the Harry A Chesler shop, contributing to titles such as The Green Hornet, The Fox, and Secret Agent Z2. He also created the feature Citizen Smith, Son of the Unknown Soldier during this time.
In 1941, Hasen began working with Sheldon Mayer, and his art during the 1940s included notable contributions to Green Lantern. He also created Wildcat, who became a superhero after being inspired by a Green Lantern comic book.
Hasen's most famous creation, Dondi, was launched in 1955 and ran for over 30 years, becoming a beloved and iconic comic strip around the world. Co-created with Gus Edson, Dondi told the story of a young Italian war orphan and his experiences in America.
In addition to his work on Dondi, Hasen continued to contribute to the world of comics, working on various projects and mentoring young artists.
