Istvn Nyers, also known as Stefano Nyers, is revered as one of the greatest football legends of Hungary, having reached the pinnacle of his career in the 1940s and 1950s. With a remarkable goal-scoring record, Nyers left an indelible mark on the football world, earning himself a permanent place in the hearts of football enthusiasts.
Born on 25 May 1924, in Freyming-Merlebach, Moselle, France, Nyers hails from an immigrant Hungarian mining family. His younger brother, Ferenc Nyers, would later follow in his footsteps, becoming a footballer as well. At the tender age of 14, Nyers moved to Budapest with his family, where he began playing with III. Kerleti TUE.
Nyers made his official debut at 17, playing for Szabadkai VAC, a Yugoslav club from Subotica that participated in the Hungarian league system. After the Hungarian annexation of Baka during World War II (1941-1944), Nyers moved to Budapest, where he had a brief stint with Ganz-MVAG SE, playing alongside the legendary Lszl Kubala.
In March 1945, Nyers played friendlies for AK Subotica, formerly Szabadkai VAC, before the club was disbanded by the new Yugoslav authorities. The team's players, however, stayed together and embarked on a tour throughout Serbia, with Nyers scoring several goals during this period.
Later that year, Nyers joined 1945 jpest FC, winning two league titles with the club. He then transferred briefly to the Czechoslovakian team FK Viktoria ikov and subsequently to the French club Stade Franais. After two years in Paris, Nyers was recruited by the Italian side Inter Milan, where he developed into one of the strongest forwards in the history of Serie A.
With 26 goals in his first season, Nyers became the top scorer of the league. In 182 games for Inter, he scored a staggering 133 goals. Twice, in 1953 and 1954, he became Italian champion with Inter. After winning the championship for the second time, Nyers left Milan and changed via Servette FC of Geneva.
Istvn Nyers' remarkable career serves as a testament to his dedication, perseverance, and passion for the beautiful game. His legacy continues to inspire generations of footballers and enthusiasts alike, cementing his place as one of the greatest football legends of Hungary.
