Riddell's illustrious skiing career was marked by numerous milestones. In 1929, he participated in the first international downhill race at Zakopane, Poland, finishing eighth among 60 racers. The same year, he clinched the Kandahar Clubs Muerren Inferno, still one of the longest and most demanding amateur downhill races. He went on to become the British national champion in 1935 and vice-captain to Sir Arnold Lunn's son, Peter, at the 1936 Winter Olympics at Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Riddell's versatility extended beyond downhill skiing. He demonstrated his proficiency in other winter sports, including cross-country skiing, slalom, and even ski jumping. At the 1936 Garmisch Olympics, he participated in the Olympic jump, clearing an impressive 50m.
Born in Wandsworth, Riddell was educated at Harrow School, where he excelled in cricket and cross-country running. He then attended Clare College, Cambridge, reading modern languages. During a year-long hiatus, he ventured to the Belgian Congo and Kenya, capturing stunning gorilla and cheetah photographs, while also writing children's books and working on publicity campaigns for De Havilland, Selfridges, and Fortnum and Mason.
