Initially, he was the second-choice goalkeeper behind Ryan Esson, but he soon took over as the first choice and led the team to a third-place finish in the 2006-07 season, earning them a spot in the UEFA Cup. In 2012, Langfield suffered a brain seizure that kept him out of competitive action for nine months, but he made a remarkable comeback and continued to play for Aberdeen.
In 2015, Langfield joined his hometown club, St Mirren, where he played regularly until May 2017. After retiring as a player, he became the goalkeeping coach at St Mirren and later took on the role of caretaker manager after Jim Goodwin's departure in February 2022.
