Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Born on September 24, 1965, in Hollywood, California, to a Jewish family, Weiss was introduced to music by her two elder sisters. She began playing guitar at 16 and later attended San Francisco State University, where she graduated with a degree in photography. During her college days, Weiss became immersed in the local club scene, following bands like Camper Van Beethoven and the Donner Party, and absorbing their punky DIY ethos.

Rise to Prominence: The Furies and Quasi

Weiss's drumming career took off when she was invited to join the all-girl trio The Furies as their replacement drummer for a West Coast tour. With only one drum lesson and two weeks of practice under her belt, Weiss became The Furies' second drummer. Her self-taught technique was honed by watching live shows and studying rock and punk greats like John Bonham and Topper Headon. In 1989, Weiss moved to Portland, Oregon, and began playing with Sam Coomes, the former leader of the Donner Party, in the band Motorgoat. When Motorgoat disbanded, Weiss and Coomes reformed as Quasi in 1993.

Sleater-Kinney and Wild Flag

Weiss's most notable collaboration is perhaps her work with Sleater-Kinney, the iconic indie rock band she joined in the mid-1990s. Her dynamic drumming was integral to the band's critically acclaimed albums, including The Hot Rock and One Beat. After Sleater-Kinney's hiatus, Weiss went on to form Wild Flag, a supergroup featuring Carrie Brownstein, Mary Timony, and Rebecca Cole. Wild Flag's self-titled debut album received widespread acclaim and showcased Weiss's remarkable versatility.
