His early years were marked by a passion for hockey, and he went on to attend Daystrom Elementary Public School, Humber Summit Middle School, and Emery Collegiate Secondary School in the Weston Road and Finch Avenue area of Toronto, and Westview Centennial Secondary School in Toronto, Ontario.

As a youth, Allison played minor ice hockey with the Toronto Red Wings, participating in the 1989 Quebec International PeeWee Hockey Tournament. His junior hockey career took off when he joined the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) from 1991 to 1994. His standout year came in 1993-1994, where he scored an impressive 142 points in 56 games, earning him the Eddie Power Trophy as the league's leading scorer, the OHL's Most Gentlemanly Player, and the Red Tilson Trophy as the league's most outstanding player.

The Washington Capitals drafted Allison 17th overall in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. He signed a four-year entry-level contract with the Capitals in 1994 and went on to play for the Boston Bruins, where he briefly served as team captain. Allison's NHL career was marked by stints with the Los Angeles Kings and Toronto Maple Leafs.

During his time in the NHL, he managed to rank among the top ten in points twice and participated in the All-Star Game once. Allison's career, however, was marred by injuries and a labour dispute, ultimately leading to his last game against the Montreal Canadiens in March 2006. He attempted a comeback in 2009 but was unsuccessful.
