Acoustic soul singer-songwriter and winner of the first season of The Voice, known for his soulful voice and heartfelt original songs.
Javier Colon, stylized as Colón, is a renowned American acoustic singer-songwriter, known for his soulful voice and eclectic blend of folk, soul, and R&B. He rose to fame after winning the inaugural season of NBC's reality show, The Voice, in 2011.
Born on April 29, 1978, in Stratford, Connecticut, Colon's early life was steeped in music. His father, a Dominican, worked at a radio station, and his Puerto Rican mother instilled in him a love for music. Colon started writing songs at Frank Scott Bunnell High School and later pursued a degree in music education from the University of Hartford's Hartt School.
During his college years, Colon performed as a vocalist and percussionist in EmcQ, a soul-funk band dedicated to the legacy of Stevie Wonder. His talent caught the attention of Eric Krasno, guitarist for Soulive, who recommended him to Derek Trucks, leading to Colon's eventual recruitment as the lead vocalist for The Derek Trucks Band in 2000.
After touring with The Derek Trucks Band for nearly two years, Colon left in 2002 to pursue a solo career, signing with Capitol Records. He released two albums, Javier (2003) and Left of Center (2006), showcasing his unique acoustic soul sound. Although his contract was terminated in 2006, Colon continued to perform and release music independently, eventually forming his own label, Javier Colon Music.
Colon's big break came in 2011 when he auditioned for The Voice, impressing coaches with his soulful rendition of Cyrus' "Time After Time." He went on to win the competition, earning a recording contract with Universal Republic Records and a $100,000 cash prize.
After parting ways with Universal Republic in 2012, Colon continued to release music independently, including the album Come Through for You (2013) and the EP Gravity (2016). His music often explores themes of love, hope, and perseverance, resonating with fans worldwide.
Colon's music often reflects his commitment to spreading love, hope, and positivity. He believes that music has the power to bring people together and inspire change, as evident in his song "One Rainy Night," which became an anthem for the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims.
Colon's unique blend of acoustic soul has inspired a new generation of musicians, and his win on The Voice paved the way for other artists to find success through reality TV. His music has also been featured on various TV shows, including Grey's Anatomy and The Vampire Diaries, introducing his sound to a broader audience.
Javier Colon's soulful voice and genre-bending sound have left an indelible mark on the music industry. As a true pioneer of acoustic soul, he continues to inspire and uplift audiences worldwide, solidifying his place as a talented and influential artist of our time.
