Jean Lambert was born on June 1, 1950, in Orsett, Essex. She went on to complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) from St Paul's College, Francis Close Hall, Cheltenham (now the University of Gloucestershire) and an Advanced Diploma in Education (ADE) in 1975.
Before entering politics, Lambert worked as a secondary school teacher in Waltham Forest, East London, from 1972 to 1985 and again from 1989 to 1993. She also holds a Professional Development Certificate in BTEC, which she achieved in 1998.
Lambert joined the Ecology Party (later becoming the Green Party of England and Wales) in 1977 and has since held various leadership positions within the party. She has been Co-Chair of the Party Council (1982-1985), Principal Speaker (1992-1993 and 1998-1999), Chair of the Party Executive (1993-1994), and Representative to the Federation of European Green Parties (1987-1989 and 1998-1999).
In 1999, Lambert was first elected to the European Parliament, representing the London Region, and has since been re-elected four times. As an MEP, she has been a member or substitute of several committees, including the Employment and Social Affairs Committee, Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee, and Subcommittee on Human Rights.
