Admiral Sir John Jeremy Black, known to many as Jeremy Black or J.J. Black, was a renowned Royal Navy officer who commanded the aircraft carrier HMS Invincible during the Falklands War. It is during this time that he earned his reputation as an inspirational leader, earning the respect and admiration of his crew.
Born on November 17, 1932, in Tavistock, Devon, Black was educated at the Royal Naval College, Eaton Hall. He saw service in various theatres, including Korea and Borneo, where he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1960 for his exceptional work.
Black's most notable appointment was as captain of the aircraft carrier HMS Invincible during the Falklands War in 1982. His exceptional leadership and tactical skills played a crucial role in the success of the British military efforts. The ship's company, in a testament to his leadership, designed T-shirts with the phrase "There and Back with JJ Black" emblazoned across the front, which later became the title of his memoirs.
Following the Falklands War, Black was promoted to rear admiral and appointed Flag Officer First Flotilla in October 1982. He went on to hold various positions, including Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff in 1984 and Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff Systems in 1986. In 1989, he became Commander-in-Chief Naval Home Command, a position he held until his retirement in 1991.
Throughout his illustrious career, Black received several honors and awards, including the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) in 1982 for his exceptional service during Operation Corporate.
After retiring from the Royal Navy, Black held the posts of Rear-Admiral and then Vice-Admiral of the United Kingdom. He also served as chairman of the Royal Navy Club of 1765-1785 United 1889. Black passed away on November 25, 2015, at the age of 83, leaving behind a legacy of exceptional leadership and service to his country.
