Born on January 12, 1957, Sams is the son of the esteemed Shakespearean scholar and musicologist Eric Sams. He pursued his passion for music at Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he read music, French, and German. Additionally, he honed his piano skills at the Guildhall School of Music.
Sams' early years were marked by his work as a freelance pianist and coach, during which he gave frequent recitals and tours, and worked as a repetiteur at opera houses in Brussels and Ankara. His directing debut came with the revival of Michael Frayn's farce Noises Off, which premiered at the Royal National Theatre in 2000 and later transferred to the West End and Broadway in 2001.

Sams' Broadway credits include Amour (2002), which he translated from the original French libretto by Didier Van Cauwelaert, earning him two Tony Award and two Drama Desk Award nominations. He also directed the Jason Robert Brown musical 13 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on Broadway.
Sams has translated numerous plays, including works by Botho Strau, Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, The Magic Flute, Puccini's La Boheme, and Wagner's The Ring Cycle for the English National Opera (ENO). His additional translations include The Merry Widow for the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and Les Parents terribles, The Miser, and Mary Stuart for the Royal National Theatre.
Sams directed the stage adaptation of The Good Life, based on the BBC TV sitcom, which toured the UK in autumn 2021. He is set to direct a stage adaptation of The Lavender Hill Mob, based on the 1951 Ealing comedy film, which will begin touring in autumn 2022.
