A pioneering R&B and doo-wop artist, known for his smooth, soulful voice and hit songs like "Guess Who" and "Goodnight My Love".
Jesse Belvin was an American singer, pianist, and songwriter who left an indelible mark on the music industry in the 1950s. With his smooth, velvety voice and masterful piano skills, Belvin co-wrote the iconic doo-wop classic "Earth Angel" and recorded the hit single "Goodnight My Love," solidifying his position as a rising star in the R&B scene.
Born on December 15, 1932, in San Antonio, Texas, Belvin moved to Los Angeles, California, with his family at the age of five. His early exposure to music led him to perform at local events, including the 5th Cavalcade of Jazz in 1949, where he shared the stage with legendary musicians Big Jay McNeely and Lionel Hampton.
In 1950, Belvin joined the backing vocal quartet Three Dots and a Dash, led by saxophonist Big Jay McNeely. His talent and charm quickly earned him a solo recording contract with Specialty Records in 1952. Although his initial releases were met with limited success, his fourth record, "Dream Girl," credited to Jesse & Marvin, reached No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard R&B chart in 1953.
Belvin's breakthrough came in 1954 when he co-wrote "Earth Angel" with Alexandrea "Gwen" Gordy and Curtis Williams for the Penguins. The song became a massive hit, selling over 10 million copies and cementing Belvin's status as a rising star. His subsequent releases, including "Goodnight My Love," solidified his position in the R&B scene.
Tragically, Belvin's life was cut short in a car crash on February 6, 1960, at the age of 27. The accident, which also claimed the lives of his wife Jo Ann and their driver, occurred after a concert in Little Rock, Arkansas, that had been disrupted by white supremacists. According to an Arkansas state trooper, the tires of Belvin's 1959 Cadillac had been tampered with.
Belvin's untimely death sent shockwaves throughout the music industry, leaving behind a legacy of incredible talent and potential. Etta James, a fellow R&B legend, remembered Belvin as "the most gifted of us all... the greatest singer of my generation."
Belvin's influence can be heard in the works of later R&B and rock 'n' roll artists, including Sam Cooke and Nat King Cole. His music continues to inspire new generations of musicians and music enthusiasts, solidifying his place in the pantheon of R&B legends.
