As a five-time IMSA Championship winner and owner-driver of DowningAtlanta Racing, Downing has left an indelible mark on the sport. Born on January 4, 1942, in Atlanta, Georgia, Downing grew up surrounded by cars and racing. His father, a major foreign car dealer, instilled in him a passion for speed and competition. Downing's racing journey began at the tender age of 11, when he started competing in soapbox derbies. He progressed to downhill slalom events and eventually, gymkhanas, which are now known as SCCA Solo events.
In 1963, Downing purchased a totaled Elva Courier for $200 and spent a year and a half restoring it. He began racing at Daytona Beach, marking the beginning of his successful amateur racing career. Over the next 11 years, he continued to excel in SCCA racing, eventually joining IMSA in 1974 at the invitation of John Bishop, President, and founder of IMSA.
Downing's partnership with Mazda, which sponsored him throughout his IMSA career, enabled him to progress from the Radial Sedan series to the ultra-competitive GTP category prototypes. His impressive performances earned him five IMSA Championship titles, cementing his status as a racing legend.
In the late 1980s, Downing, along with Dr. Robert Hubbard, developed the HANS (Head and Neck Support) device. This innovative safety feature was designed to prevent basilar skull fractures, a common cause of fatalities in racing accidents. The HANS device has since become a mandatory safety requirement in many racing series, including IndyCar, NASCAR, and IMSA.
Downing is a graduate of Georgia Tech, where he earned a degree in industrial management. He married public relations specialist Connie Goudinoff in 1989 and is a member of the Phi Gamma Delta FIJI fraternity.
