Doyle's educational journey took him from Madison West High School to Stanford University, and later to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he completed his senior year. Inspired by John F. Kennedy's call to public service, he went on to serve in the Peace Corps with his wife, Jessica Doyle, teaching in Tunisia from 1967 to 1969.
In 1972, Doyle earned his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School, and soon began working as an attorney in a federal legal services office on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Chinle, Arizona. His dedication to serving the marginalized and underrepresented would become a hallmark of his career.
Returning to Madison, Wisconsin in 1975, Doyle served three terms as Dane County District Attorney from 1977 to 1982, and later worked in private practice for eight years. In 1990, he was elected Wisconsin Attorney General, a position he held for 13 years, earning re-election in 1994 and 1998.
Doyle's gubernatorial tenure was marked by his tireless efforts to improve education, healthcare, and the economy in Wisconsin. He successfully implemented the "BadgerCare Plus" program, providing healthcare coverage to over 70,000 low-income children and their families.
