Luxury shoe designer and founder of eponymous brand, renowned for stylish and sophisticated high-heeled footwear.
Jimmy Choo is renowned for his exquisite, handmade women's shoes that have become a staple in the fashion industry. With a career spanning over three decades, he has built a brand synonymous with luxury, style, and sophistication.
Born on November 15, 1948, in the Crown Colony of Penang, Malaysia, Jimmy Choo came from a family of shoemakers. His father, a skilled craftsman, taught him the art of shoe-making from a young age. Choo's first pair of shoes was a pair of slippers he made when he was just 11 years old.
After completing his studies at Cordwainers Technical College in Hackney, now part of the London College of Fashion, Choo worked at two design companies for nine years before starting his own business. With the help of the Princes Trust, he launched his own label and eventually opened his first shop in 1986.
His big break came in 1988 when his designs were featured in London Fashion Week, followed by an eight-page spread in Vogue magazine. This exposure catapulted him to fame, and his designs soon became popular among fashion icons, including Princess Diana.
In 1996, Choo co-founded Jimmy Choo Ltd. with British Vogue magazine accessories editor Tamara Mellon. The company quickly gained popularity, and in 2001, Choo sold his 50% stake in the company for £10 million. He then focused on his exclusive Jimmy Choo couture line, produced under license from Jimmy Choo Ltd.
