A popular singer-songwriter of the 1960s, known for his smooth, soulful voice and hits like "Just a Dream" and "Venus in Blue Jeans".
Jimmy Clanton, born September 2, 1938, is an American singer known for his iconic hit song "Just a Dream," which catapulted him to fame as the swamp pop R&B teenage idol of the 1950s and 1960s. With his smooth voice and distinctive style, Clanton rode the crest of the popular teen music wave, charting in the U.S. Top 40 seven times.
Clanton formed his first band, the Rockets, in 1956 while attending Baton Rouge High School. One of the few white singers to come out of the New Orleans R&B/rock and roll sound, he was discovered by Huey P. Meaux, a local record producer, who signed him to Ace Records. Clanton's big break came with the release of "Just a Dream," a song he wrote himself, which reached number four on the Billboard chart and sold over a million copies.
Clanton's music and style have had a lasting impact on the development of rock and roll. He was one of the first white artists to successfully blend R&B and rock and roll, paving the way for future generations of musicians. His music has been cited as an influence by artists such as Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly.
In early 1961, Clanton was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he spent the next two years serving his country. During this time, he continued to have chart successes, releasing hits like "Don't Look at Me" and "Because I Do."
In May 1960, Ace Records announced that Philadelphia had proclaimed the week of May 16 to be Jimmy Clanton Week. Clanton was also signed to Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars national U.S. tour, further solidifying his status as a teen idol.
Clanton's music has stood the test of time, with his hits remaining popular to this day. He has been inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame and the Rockabilly Hall of Fame, cementing his place as a pioneer of rock and roll. Clanton's influence can be seen in the many artists he has inspired, from rockabilly to swamp pop and beyond.
