Born on October 27, 1950, in Poprad, Czechoslovakia, upler began his playing career in his hometown before moving on to Liptovsk Mikul and eventually Slovan Bratislava. His playing days may have been fulfilling, but it was his coaching career that would bring him true recognition.
Upler's coaching career began as an assistant coach in Poprad from 1979 to 1985, before taking on the role of head coach from 1985 to 1987. His big break came in the 1991-1992 season when he led HC Dukla Trenn to the Czechoslovakia title. This was just the beginning of a long and illustrious coaching career.
In 1993, upler became the head coach of the Slovakia national team, a position he would hold until 1996.
