Born on January 12, 1975, in Montreal, Quebec, Thibault grew up in nearby Laval, where his passion for hockey began. As a youth, he participated in the 1988 Quebec International PeeWee Hockey Tournament with a minor ice hockey team from Laval, Quebec. His exceptional skills led him to play in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) with the Trois-Rivières Draveurs and Sherbrooke Faucons.
The Quebec Nordiques drafted Thibault 10th overall in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. He began his NHL journey with the Nordiques, later moving to Denver with the team's relocation to become the Colorado Avalanche. In 1995, Thibault was traded to the Montreal Canadiens, where he played three seasons before joining the Chicago Blackhawks in November 1998.
Thibault's most successful season was 2002-2003, during which he recorded eight shutouts and participated in the 2003 NHL All-Star Game. He achieved a career-best goals-against average (GAA) of 2.37 and a save percentage of .915. Throughout his career, Thibault played for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres, accumulating an impressive 238 wins and 35 shutouts.
