Mahoney was born on February 7, 1919, in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in Davenport, Iowa. He was of French and Irish descent, the only child of Ruth and Charles O'Mahoney. Mahoney attended the University of Iowa, where he excelled in swimming and diving, but dropped out to enlist in the United States Marine Corps when World War II began.
During his time in the Marine Corps, Mahoney served as a pilot and flight instructor. After his discharge, he moved to Los Angeles and began his journey in the film industry. He started as a horse breeder but soon became a movie stuntman, doubling for legendary actors such as Gregory Peck, Errol Flynn, and John Wayne.
Mahoney's big break came when he performed a daring stunt in director Vincent Sherman's 1948 film Adventures of Don Juan, for which he received $1,000. This marked the beginning of his successful career in Hollywood. During the late 1940s and early 1950s, Mahoney worked extensively with Columbia Pictures, appearing in numerous films and two-reel comedies, often starring alongside the Three Stooges.
