Hinton's music career began with the Blair Gospel Singers, the Chosen Gospel Quartet, and the Spirit of Memphis Quartet. However, it was his collaboration with producer Don Robey that brought him to the forefront of the music scene. Robey, impressed by Hinton's talent, asked him to try his hand at secular music, and in 1958, Hinton began recording for Robey's record label, Peacock Records.
It wasn't until 1963 that Hinton's fifth single, "You Know It Ain't Right", charted, followed by "Better to Give Than to Receive", which also gained traction. But it was "Funny How Time Slips Away", written by Willie Nelson, that catapulted Hinton to fame, peaking at 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and staying at the top of the Cash Box magazine's R&B chart for four weeks.
