Founded a popular street newspaper that empowers homeless individuals to earn a living, providing a platform for their voices to be heard. Known for pioneering social entrepreneurship and innovative solutions to poverty.
John Bird, Baron Bird, is a British social entrepreneur and life peer best known for co-founding The Big Issue, a magazine that empowers homeless and vulnerably housed individuals to take control of their lives. With a mission to provide a hand-up, not a handout, The Big Issue has become a beacon of hope for those struggling on the streets.
Born on January 30, 1946, in a Notting Hill slum to a poor London Irish family, Bird's early life was marred by poverty and instability. He became homeless at the age of five and was placed in an orphanage between the ages of seven and ten, where he often struggled in school and was frequently excluded.
After leaving the orphanage, Bird worked as a butcher's boy and supplemented his income by stealing. His teenage years and twenties were marked by multiple stints in prison, where he learned to read, write, and develop basic printing skills.
In the early 1970s, Bird built upon his prison education and established a small-scale printing and publishing business in London. This marked a significant turning point in his life, as he began to channel his energy into creating opportunities for himself and others.
In September 1991, Bird co-founded The Big Issue with Gordon Roddick, co-founder of The Body Shop. The magazine's innovative approach – empowering vendors to take ownership of their sales and providing a platform for self-expression – resonated with the public, and The Big Issue quickly gained popularity.
In November 1995, Bird launched The Big Issue Foundation to further support vendors and provide essential services, such as housing, health, and education. Today, he serves on the Board of Directors for The Big Issue Group, which encompasses The Big Issue, Big Issue Invest, and The Big Issue Foundation.
The Big Issue's success paved the way for its expansion to other British cities, and eventually, to over 100 street papers in 34 countries, published in 24 languages. Bird's vision for a global network of street papers has created a powerful platform for marginalized communities to express themselves and access vital services.
Bird's work is underpinned by a profound commitment to addressing the root causes of homelessness and social inequality. He believes that everyone deserves a chance to rebuild their lives and that, with the right support, anyone can overcome adversity.
In his own words, "The Big Issue is not just a magazine, it's a symbol of hope. It's a reminder that, no matter how far you've fallen, you can always get back up again."
John Bird's tireless efforts have transformed the lives of countless individuals and inspired a new wave of social entrepreneurs. As a champion of the marginalized and a beacon of hope for those struggling on the streets, Bird's legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
