Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Doman is an alumnus of Northeast Catholic High School, where he excelled as an All-Catholic League football player and was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1966 with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, and later earned a Master of Business Administration degree in marketing from Pennsylvania State University in 1972.
In between his studies, Doman served with the United States Marine Corps, enrolling in its Officer Candidates School at Quantico, Virginia. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in March 1967 and served with the 3rd Marine Division in the Vietnam War. Following his military service, Doman spent nearly two decades in the advertising business, working with top agencies such as SSCB Advertising and Norman Craig & Kummel, and eventually becoming one of the first six employees at TBWA New York.
Doman's pivot to a full-time acting career began in 1991, when he was cast in a commercial for AT&T. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life, as he started taking on minor roles in film and television.
