Justin Lin is a Taiwanese-American director, producer, and screenwriter who has left an indelible mark on the world of filmmaking. Born on October 11, 1971, in Taipei, Taiwan, Lin immigrated to the United States with his family at the age of eight and grew up in Buena Park, California. A standout student, Lin earned the rank of Eagle Scout in March 1989 while a member of Boy Scout Troop 670. He attended the University of California, San Diego, for two years before transferring to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he received a Bachelor of Arts in film and television and a Master of Fine Arts in film directing and production from the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television.
In 2006, Lin took the helm of The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, resetting the tone and pace of the franchise. His subsequent work on Fast & Furious (2009), Fast Five (2011), Fast & Furious 6 (2013), and F9 (2021) has cemented the series' status as a global phenomenon.
In addition to his film work, Lin has made a significant impact on television, directing episodes of the critically acclaimed series Community and serving as an executive producer on the second season of True Detective.
