Born on 21 January 1980, in Newcastle, New South Wales, Forsterling was initially schooled at St Vincent's Primary in the ACT. Later, he attended Melbourne Grammar School, where he discovered his passion for rowing. He went on to graduate from Monash University in Melbourne with a Bachelor of Engineering in 2001. Before committing to a full-time rowing career, Forsterling worked for the multinational consulting firm AECOM.
Forsterling has a long-standing association with the Melbourne University Boat Club, where he has had an illustrious career. He represented Victoria in the Kings Cup at the Australian Rowing Championships on eleven occasions between 2001 and 2015, securing six victories and five second-place finishes. Additionally, he was selected to compete in the interstate men's Single scull for Victoria in the Presidents Cup in 2011 and 2016, finishing second on both occasions.
