In his junior year, Appling started every game and led the Spartans in scoring with 13.4 points per game and assists with 3.3 per game, earning All-Big Ten second-team honors. In his senior year, he averaged 11.2 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game.
Although Appling went undrafted in the 2014 NBA draft, he joined the Portland Trail Blazers for the 2014 NBA Summer League. He then signed with the Los Angeles Lakers on September 23, 2014, but was later waived on October 20. Appling was acquired by the Los Angeles D-Fenders in November 2014, but eventually parted ways with the team.
In 2016, Appling appeared sporadically for the Orlando Magic before being waived. Despite the setbacks, Appling's resilience and determination to pursue his basketball dreams remained unwavering.
